OFFICE OF STUDENT EXPERIENCE & WELL-BEING
The Office of Student Experience and Well-Being (OSEW) helps every student feel known, supported, and connected while fostering spiritual, personal, and professional growth along the journey of becoming a Christ-centered physician.
Student Well-Being
Becoming a physician is a profound journey of academic rigor, clinical dedication, and personal transformation. At the BYU School of Medicine, we believe that students’ ability to provide exceptional, Christ-centered care to future patients begins with how they take care of themselves. True well-being is multi-dimensional, encompassing mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health.
Wellness Resources
The information below summarizes the wellness resources provided by the BYU School of Medicine and the greater BYU campus:
Onsite Personal Counseling
Located within the BYU School of Medicine, our dedicated counselors provide free, immediate access to individual counseling, support groups, and stress-management workshops tailored to the specific pressures of medical education. The Director of Student Well-Being serves as the primary, local point of contact for students navigating personal or non-academic concerns.
BYU Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
To supplement onsite counseling services, BYU School of Medicine students have full access to BYU CAPS on main campus in the Wilkinson Student Center. CAPS provides up to seven free individual counseling sessions per academic year, unlimited counselor-referred group therapy, and dedicated telehealth counseling for students away on clinical rotations or clerkships. CAPS also manages an emergency after-hours crisis hotline.
Wellness Programming
Through workshops, small-group discussions, and individualized guidance, students will develop the habits, skills, and resources needed to thrive in medical school and prepare for a sustainable career in medicine. Topics include stress management, resilience, healthy relationships, and maintaining balance amid the demands of medical training. Programming will be guided by the BYU Wellness Wise model, empowering students to become their best selves by promoting awareness, balance, and growth across six dimensions of wellness: physical, spiritual, emotional, financial, social, and intellectual.
