STUDENT-CENTERED RESEARCH
A Transformative Research Experience for Every Student
The research program at the BYU School of Medicine is designed with students at its center. Beginning in year one and culminating in an 8- to 12-week global health immersive experience, all students participate in a transformative research curriculum that provides hands-on experience conducting research that addresses priority health outcome gaps. Students are mentored by faculty with deep research expertise and work in partnership with local experts from the communities their research seeks to serve.
Regardless of background or specialty choice, every student will receive spiritually grounded, scientifically rigorous research training that prepares them to be competitive for residencies in their chosen field and to go forth to serve as disciple-scholars and Christ-centered physicians.
Longitudinal Experiential Research Curriculum
Applied Research
Midway through Phase 1, students are paired with dedicated faculty research mentors who will tailor the research experience to the skills and career goals of each student. Faculty will empower students to make immediate contributions to their research team as they work closely with other students, experts, and community partners.
Students will develop state-of-the-art research skills, become subject matter experts in their area of focus, develop relationships with collaborators and community members, and have spiritual experiences that accelerate discovery.
Immersive Research Experience
Every student participates in a unique, immersive global health fieldwork experience where research intersects with communities in need.
Working alongside partners in low-resource settings in the U.S. and abroad, students gain firsthand experience conducting research that addresses high-priority health challenges.
