LCME Accreditation Stages

  • Preliminary Accreditation: Granted before a medical school enrolls its first class. Authorizes the school to recruit, admit, and educate medical students. Schools are considered accredited upon receiving preliminary accreditation.
  • Provisional Accreditation: Typically reviewed when the inaugural class is in its second year. The LCME evaluates implementation of the curriculum and the school's progress toward meeting all accreditation standards.
  • Full Accreditation: Typically reviewed when the inaugural class reaches its final year. Full accreditation is granted after the LCME determines the program is operating satisfactorily and complies with accreditation standards.

For additional information on accreditation and accreditation verification, visit the LCME website or contact the LCME at lcme@aamc.org.
