HOW TO APPLY
Step 1: Submit Your AMCAS Application
- Complete and submit your application on AMCAS.
- Select Brigham Young University School of Medicine when choosing schools.
- Submit all required transcripts, letters of recommendation, and MCAT scores.
Letters of Recommendation
You are required to submit either:
1. A minimum of two letters and a maximum of three letters of recommendation. One letter must be from a science faculty member familiar with your academic work.
OR
2. One pre-health/medical committee letter or paragraph.
We strongly recommend you seek letters from individuals who know you well and can speak meaningfully about your experiences, strengths, and readiness for the practice of medicine.
These letters may come from a healthcare professional with whom you have worked with over a period of time, a college/university faculty member, or an employment or volunteer supervisor who can assess your work ethic and experience.
Letters must be on letterhead and signed.
Step 2: Complete the BYU Secondary Application
Once your verified AMCAS application is received and reviewed, eligible applicants will be invited to complete the secondary application. Applicants who receive a secondary application will be asked to:
- Submit three additional essay responses.
- Pay the secondary application fee ($50, non-refundable).
- Complete the BYU Honor Code Commitment.
- Complete an Ecclesiastical Endorsement.
Additional details and instructions will be sent by email.
Application Fee Assistance
If you’re experiencing financial hardship, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) may waive your AMCAS application fee through the AAMC Fee Assistance Program.
Fee waivers are given based on prior qualifications set by the AAMC when an applicant completes their AMCAS. If the AAMC deems that an applicant qualifies for a fee waiver, BYU will receive a notification and the system will automatically waive the secondary application fee.
Timeline and Deadlines
The inaugural admissions cycle for the BYU School of Medicine will begin later than the standard AMCAS application cycle to accommodate the timing of the School of Medicine receiving preliminary accreditation.

The BYU School of Medicine reviews each completed application—which includes the AMCAS application, letters of recommendation, MCAT score, and secondary application— using a holistic review process.
Admissions evaluators assess each applicant by considering a range of factors. These include personal attributes, community service, values, educational background, GPA, MCAT scores, breadth of life experiences, research involvement, as well as an ecclesiastical endorsement and demonstrated commitment to the Honor Code.
The results of the screening process will determine which applicants are invited to interview with the BYU School of Medicine.
Interview Day takes place in-person on the BYU campus. Invited applicants will participate in a traditional 45-minute interview and Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs). The day also includes opportunities to tour facilities, enjoy a meal, attend a program presentation, and interact with faculty, staff, and fellow candidates.
The Admissions Committee uses a rolling admissions process, meaning applications are reviewed and decisions are made throughout the admissions cycle. All admissions decisions (Acceptance, Waitlist, Not Accepted) will be communicated to applicants by the Office of Admissions.
