FOUNDING PRINCIPLES
Message From the Dean
Welcome to the BYU School of Medicine, where medicine and mission are one. This school of medicine was announced by a prophet of God rather than a corporate CEO or university president. Our mission is to create future physicians who understand that becoming a physician is a gift from God to bless the lives of His children throughout the world. It is a gift that is obtained through years of personal effort, family and community support, and faith that God will provide the needed miracles.
We exist to increase good in the world and prevent and alleviate human suffering. We have exceptional faculty and staff who have all made sacrifices to be part of the BYU School of Medicine because they feel a calling from God to contribute to a sacred medical education mission and work. If you join us, you will work with faculty who are the most talented, dedicated, and Christlike medical educators with whom I have ever worked. They and our staff are people who have come to expect and receive miracles. We are seeking those who want to be part of the ongoing miracle that is the BYU School of Medicine.
Join us to become a healer, teacher, researcher, leader, and disciple of Jesus Christ.
MISSION STATEMENT
The Brigham Young University School of Medicine is founded on the teachings and example of Jesus Christ, the Master Healer, and guided by the doctrine and leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
We provide a spiritually grounded and scientifically rigorous education for physicians who will minister to God's children throughout the world as healers, teachers, researchers, leaders, and disciples of Jesus Christ.
We approach the practice of medicine as an opportunity to prevent and alleviate human suffering and to care for all people as fellow children of a loving God.
A Prophetic Foundation
On July 29, 2024, the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the creation of the BYU School of Medicine:
"Brigham Young University is committed to academic excellence in targeted graduate disciplines, traditionally focused on business and law. The First Presidency is pleased to announce the decision now to create a medical school at BYU. A major focus will be on international health issues affecting members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Church’s worldwide humanitarian efforts.
"Plans for this medical school are underway, and specific target dates will be announced as they are set. It is envisioned that unlike many medical schools, the BYU medical school will be focused on teaching with research in areas of strategic importance to the Church. In time the school will draw students from within and outside the United States.
"The BYU medical school will not create its own hospital or hospital system. BYU and Intermountain Health are discussing a mutually beneficial clinical relationship. Also, it is anticipated that the medical school will seek collaborative relationships with various entities in Utah, including the University of Utah."
"Jesus Christ healed the sick and served those in need. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we believe the BYU School of Medicine is another way to lift God's children."
