Our Story
The First Presidency is pleased to announce the decision now to create a medical school at BYU...It is envisioned that unlike many medical schools, the BYU medical school will be focused on teaching with research in areas of strategic importance to the Church.
Soon to be established in Provo, Utah, the BYU School of Medicine is committed to cultivating Christ-centered physicians who combine technical excellence with compassion, moral integrity, and a desire to "go forth and serve" God and His children. Leveraging Brigham Young University’s strengths in science, engineering, and the humanities, the school will train future physicians to integrate cutting-edge tools with a spiritually grounded commitment to whole-person care.
This is a spiritually guided school of medicine. All medical schools focus on creating great physicians, and so will we. But the BYU School of Medicine is also meant to further the work of the Lord by supporting the Church's global humanitarian efforts and spreading the gospel.
With nationally ranked programs in life sciences, engineering, and public health, BYU offers a strong academic foundation for launching a medical school. The School of Medicine will build on this record of excellence by fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, research, and experiential learning. In keeping with BYU’s commitment to affordability and accessibility, the medical school will offer a reduced cost of attendance to ease the financial burden on students and expand access to medical education. Students will be prepared to meet the demands of modern medicine through a combination of rigorous training, moral leadership, and a commitment to service. At its core, the BYU School of Medicine is deeply committed to the principles of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ, which will guide its teaching, mentoring, and care for each child of God.
As we embrace our unique institutional identity, we will foster at BYU a unique learning environment that will empower us to be peacemakers in an ever more divisive society.
The BYU School of Medicine responds to a pressing global need. As part of a broader BYU Health initiative, the school will emphasize service to underserved populations through hands-on clinical training in Utah’s growing medical hub, and global health opportunities aligned with BYU’s mission of faith, scholarship, and service. Future BYU-trained physicians will be prepared to lead in both healing and innovation—locally and globally.
Jesus Christ healed the sick and served those in need. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we believe BYU’s medical school is another way to lift God’s children.
